THE UNHATE CAMPAIGN BY BENETTON

Just give it a chance before you judge! This is a truly amazing campaign. Above is the new campaign of well known clothing brand: Benetton which supports The Unhate Foundation. In the ads, world leaders are shown kissing to promote tolerance and combat hatred in all forms.

Unhate. “What does UNHATE mean?” UN-hate. Stop hating, if you were hating. Unhate is a message that invites us to consider that hate and love are not as far away from each other as we think. Actually, the two opposing sentiments are often in a delicate and unstable balance. The campaign promotes a shift in the balance: don’t hate, Unhate.

This cold snap may be “le comble” that has us putting in for a transfer to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Library. Un comble (basically the last straw or the height of something) is the heading for this encounter between two polar bears, illustrating the comical humiliations and misunderstandings of Benjamin Rabier’s animal friends. It reads:

“— Nous allons mourir de froid… Quarante degrés au-dessous de zéro!…”

“— Laisse-moi tranquille!… avec tes quarante degrés de froid… ce que tu me fais suer!…”

roughly translated as:

“We’re gonna freeze to death. 40 degrees below zero!”

“Let me be!… with your forty degrees of cold. You make me sweat!”

Les petites misères de la vie des animaux by Benjamin Rabier. Rabier’s illustrations might look a little familiar—his illustration is still the trademark Laughing Cow of processed cheese fame.

David Mzuguno (Tanzanian, 1951–2010)
Untitled, undated
Enamel paint on board

Auction notes

Mzuguno began his career in the arts with the Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society. He was selling more than the other painters and 1989, he left to pursue his own technique, taking the Tinga Tinga style in a new direction. He spent the next few years painting for a Japanese collector, a guest at the University of Dar es Salaam from his home in Mlandizi, Tanzania.

The richness of nature in Mzuguno’s paintings is inspired by his roots in the Kilimanjaro region where he was born. In 2013, he held a solo exhibition at the Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam. In 2009, he participated in a residency programme in China at the Shenzhen Fine Art Institute. He passed away in 2010, shortly after a very successful exhibition in Kampala.
